Lions Add Former National Defensive Player of the Year to the Defensive Line

12/31/2018 12:27 PM

The Columbus Lions organization and former Georgia Bulldog Trent Thompson have agreed to terms for the 2019 NAL season.  The move adds yet another dominant force to the Columbus defensive line, which is poised to be the best in all of Arena Football.  Thompson will also add to the Lions' SEC pedigree on the defensive side of the ball, joining other former SEC defensive standouts Greg Hall (Auburn), JT Surratt (South Carolina), LaMichael Fanning (Alabama), Martay Mattox (South Carolina), Shattle Fenteng (Georgia), and Bradyn Jasper (Vanderbilt) on the 2019 roster.

Trent Thompson (6'3, 300 - Georgia) comes to the Columbus Lions as a rookie to Arena Football fresh off a stint with the Cleveland Browns, in which he had an appearance on HBO's hit series "Hard Knocks" - who was documenting the Browns during 2018 training camp.  Thompson will be a familiar face to many in the Columbus area, as he starred at Defensive Tackle for the Georgia Bulldogs during the 2015-2017 football seasons, including the Bulldogs run to the 2017 SEC Championship and CFB National Championship game.  Thompson excelled while in Athens, starting for the Bulldogs every year he was there.  Thompson's most productive season, statistically, was the 2016 season in which he led the Bulldogs interior defensive line with 56 tackles, 9 TFLs, and 5 sacks.  That same year Thompson was selected as the MVP of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl after posting a 3 sack performance in a win over TCU.  In 2017, Thompson was a preseason First Team All-SEC selection before deciding to forgo his senior year of eligibility to enter the 2018 NFL draft, where he was picked up by the Browns with teammate Nick Chubb.
Thompson is a native of Albany, Georgia and exited Westover High School as one of the most decorated athletes to ever come out of the state.  Thompson was rated as a 5-star prospect by every major recruiting service/publication, and was also rated as the top prospect in all of the country by 247sports as well as being the #2 and #3 ranked recruit in the nation by Scout and ESPN, respectively.  Thompson's senior football season was highlighted by being selected as the USA Today National High School Player of the Year, as well as being a USA Today and Parada Magazine All-American.
Stay tuned to find out who the Lions will sign next in their quest for the 2019 NAL Championship!
