Lions Add 2 More to Star-Studded Roster

The Columbus Lions keep adding top tier talent to their roster, this time by the way of former SEC Defensive Lineman JT Surratt and veteran Wide Receiver Shawn Mitchell.  The pair have each come to terms with the Lions organization for the 2019 season in hopes of helping carry the Lions to their 5th consecutive championship appearance.

JT Surratt (6'2, 290 - South Carolina) is a familiar name to many SEC fans, as he starred on the University of South Carolina defensive line next to Jadeveon Clowney.  Surratt comes to Columbus with previous arena experience, after spending a stint out west with the Arizona Rattlers.  Surratt's impressive career began as a three star prospect out of Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  The all-state selection was soon signed to the Gamecocks and exploded on to the scene during Surratt's junior season, in 2013, as a starter for all 13 games for USC.  The following season, Surratt's senior campaign, he was voted as a preseason All-SEC selection and named one of four team captains for the Gamecocks.  Surratt repeated his production from his junior season, starting every game for USC and was the leader of a young defensive unit.  Surratt finished his collegiate career with 79 tackles, 11 TFLs, and 2 sacks - earning himself an invite to the 2015 NFL Combine.  Even as a projected late round draft pick, Surratt never got his opportunity to show what he could do at the NFL level.  Still having the desire to play professional football, Surratt comes to Columbus looking to be an impact player in the NAL and looking to show what the NFL missed out on.
Shawn Mitchell (5'11, 175 - Eastern Illinois) comes to Columbus with a bevy of arena experience.  After spending time with the former Tampa Bay Storm of the AFL, and most recently the Bloomington Edge, Mitchell looks forward to showing off his talents at the higher competition level.  Known for his blinding speed, Mitchell adds another element to a receiving core wearing Lions blue that has the talent to establish themselves as the top receiving core in all of Arena Football.  Before his professional career, Mitchell was a standout at Eastern Illinois University, finishing the 2016 season as the second leading pass catcher on the team while starting every game for the Panthers.  Prior to his collegiate career, Mitchell was a highly sought after prospect in the state of Illinois at Rich Central High School.  Mitchell was voted Chicagoland All-Area, 3-time All-Conference, and was named a 4-star recruit by 24/7sports.com after finishing a prep career with an astonishing 2,459 receiving yards, 23 TDs, and 102 receptions.
